Summer intensive workshop in Madrid from august 1st to august 8th 2010

Educational stay in Flamenco Land

For the fifth consecutive year, we intend to organize an international workshop dedicated to the flamenco culture. It is designed for aficionados of all levels, from the very beginners to the most advanced students, as well as professional dancers, singers and musicians. It is open to all, regardless of their nationality. This project is considered as an extension of and a useful complement to Gabriel Da Rocha’s teaching within his school, and is organized by the Aficionados de la Nueva Academia del Flamenco association (ANAF) within the context of the educational events it offers.

It is not a theme trip, but an educational stay with cultural immersion aimed at arousing the curiosity of certain students, while improving others’ understanding and command of this complex and wonderful art.Whilst the teaching of Flamenco in France is not subject to any control, nor protected by any diploma, and regarding the endless number of existing offers, this workshop is designed to be a reference training.

Since most of the audience is not bilingual, it is also the opportunity to get started with or to improve one’s practice of spanish, the language of flamenco. This workshop is organized by the ANAF, an association under French Association Law 1901 registered on June 7th 2006 at the Paris police headquarter. The ANAF is a non-profit association and was funded on May 19th 2006 by the students of the Nueva Academia del Flamenco, to whom the teaching method created by Gabriel Da Rocha is of crucial importance. Equally important are its underlying principles: accurate transmission and respect for tradition, classes oriented to the progression and body development of every student, guitar accompaniment for all sessions, training aimed at acquiring a strong technique, as well as an acute sense of rhythm and music. The association operates on the basis of membership fees and thanks to the devotion of volunteers. With its legally-recognized articles of association, the experience of its art director, and the nature of its project, the association offers a safe context, and the best guaranty against the commercialism observed elsewhere.

The purpose of this educational stay is for homogeneously-divided groups of students (beginners, intermediate, advanced) to achieve concrete goals in each discipline (technical bases, acquisition of the basics, command of the codes, learning a choreography).

To this end, the idea is to ensure a first-quality training. In this respect, the excellence, aura and fame of the masters – who will specifically get together for the occasion in a prestigious institution – are notorious and undisputable.

This approach is multidisciplinary (dance, music, singing) and offers a comprehensive program: various disciplines, theoretical approach, films, conferences, and practice. Also optionally available are various workshops: singing, rhythm and palmas, guitar, cajón, castanets, bata de cola (dress with long trail), fin de fiesta por tangos and por bulería, and sevillanas. Each group of dancers should be accompanied by musicians – guitarist and singer – the sine qua none condition for understanding and practicing flamenco dance. This art organizes itself in sequences corresponding to steps of a both plastic and musical dialogue. The idea is for students to discover flamenco through an artistic, as well as a human experience, where listening, exchanging, control, intensity, and improvisation have their place.
